Curiosity is something that every cat has. They seem to be able to get by without you, but they tend to like to be around you at times too. The are often vexing, but cats can also be very satisfying as pets. Here are some things you can do to make sure you’re caring properly for your cat.
Make sure your cat sees a vet regularly to maintain their good health. They should have a routine check-up once a year or more if important shots are due. If your cat has any health issues or injuries, you should try and have them seen right away.
Spray bitter apple on electrical cords to keep cats away from them. If your cat still prefers to chew on cords, then you have to make sure they stay covered. Use some paper towel rolls to tuck loose cords. If you have electrical cords laying out that are not being used, put them away as cats can play with them and then move on to live electrical cords.
A microchip will allow you to find your pet if it is lost. Even a house cat may end up lost outside, no matter how careful you are. Other measures like tags and collars are better than nothing, but your cat may wriggle out of them or they may be torn off by outdoor hazards. Microchips are as small as a rice grain and have all of your important contact information. Every shelter and most veterinarian offices have microchip scanners that can read the chips, and best of all, they chips can’t be lost.
Make sure your cat is not too bored. Cats need play and exercise. Too frequently this need is overlooked by owners. A bored cat runs the risk of developing depression and obsessive compulsive disorders that may harm them or something in your home. Give them room to play and a large number of toys. If your cats are kept inside, set up a carpet lined scratching pad or post. There are many climbing structures that can be purchased or made for cats who enjoy heights.
Cats are great pets, but little ones may not understand that they are fragile. Tell them how to be gentle. Help them learn how to pick up a cat and care for it. Cats have weaker bones than dogs and need more gentle treatment.
Just because your family did it when you were a child, does not mean allowing your cat to go outside is a wise decision. Being outside all the time is not safe for a cat. You cat can get fleas and contract diseases. Cats can also be hunted by other animals, stolen or hit by passing vehicles. If you still insist your cat be able to go outside, then do so in the fenced backyard.
Do you have both a dog and a cat? A dog may enjoy eating your cat’s food when he has the chance to do so. If you’re having a problem with this, make your cat’s eating area high enough that your dog cannot reach. This can also prevent unnecessary arguments between your pets over the water supply, once the food has been consumed.
High areas are ideal for cats. To make your cat really happy, give it a place to safely survey its area. You can use a cleared shelf if you’d rather not have a cat tree. The cat will especially enjoy it if you put a blanket on top.
When your cat makes a mess somewhere other than their litter box, don’t get mad. Check out the box instead and see if it has been neglected; this is often a cause of accidents. Punishing your cat may cause him to become afraid of you or their litter box.
Cats aren’t easy to understand, but they sure are loving. The above advice will allow you to give them a better life. Cats make wonderful pets for most people, but only if you are willing and able to give them the care and attention they deserve.
