Cats are a great animal to keep in your home or apartment. Apart from the affection they give, cats also serve a practical purpose by keeping pests out of the house. People often underestimate how helpful a kitty can be, and how much one can do to get rid of pests.
Cats love to squeeze into tiny spots. If they’ve got a collar on, this may put them in danger as it can get stuck. Breakaway collars are made to come off if tugged on vigorously. This could save your cat’s life if the collar gets caught in some branches.
You shouldn’t ever use products designed to be used on dogs on your cat. Cats have very strong, negative reactions to products formulated for dogs. Flea products for dogs are one of the worst products to give a cat. Dog products that are flea related can kill a cat. After getting the dog treated, keep the cat away for many hours.
You should get your cat a tagged collar, even if it is not legally required. This can help if your cat becomes lost while wandering in the great outdoors. The tag needs your phone number and cat’s name at the minimum.
Think about getting a microchip for your feline friend. Even indoor cats get out sometimes. Even if you put a collar or tag on your cat, be careful as they can wiggle out of these very easily and can be dangerous if they get caught on a foreign object like a tree branch. A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and can hold all of your contact information. Scanners to read pet microchips are available in every town and they will not come out from under the skin.
Keep your cat away from boredom. Just like dogs, cats need playtime and physical exercise, too. Sadly, this is overlooked by many cat owners. Bored cats can really be a problem. They can have health issues, OCD, and even depression. Give them lots of space for exercise and plenty of toys they can play with. Be sure your cat has something they can climb and something they can scratch if they stay inside.
Anytime you travel with a cat, their ears should be monitored. You might love blasting your favorite music while driving, but they enjoy softer sounds. If your cat seems upset or agitated, turn down the music and speak calmly to him.
Avoid letting your cat go outdoors. This can be very unsafe for your cat. The cat can get fleas or something much worse. They might get injured by some other animals, vehicles, or people. If you must let your cat outside, do so in a very small area of your backyard or lawn.
Do you have dogs and cats? Dogs will always try to eat a cat’s food. Try locating your cat’s food in an area where the dog cannot go. This can prevent squabbles over water when their food is gone.
You shouldn’t leave a young cat with children unattended. Children under five years of age should not be left alone with a kitten. They are just not mature enough to understand the danger they can pose for the kitten. As your child matures, carefully consider whether a small pet is safe with them.
Give your cat a wide array of foods in order to prevent pickiness. If you feed them the same cat food every day, they may not accept anything else. This makes it difficult to find food they’ll eat when a store runs out of a certain brand, or you are traveling.
Provide your cat with a drinking fountain. This will make things more comfortable and homey for your cat. Cats generally respond better to a stream of water. You may have noticed that a dripping sink faucet quickly attracts their attention. A fountain keeps the water moving without letting any go to waste.
Make sure play time is an important part of your cat’s life. All mammals love to play. Even a mature cat that isn’t as spry anymore it still loves to play around. Take the time to play and have a little fun with your kitty.
Try and incorporate dry food into your cats diet. Kittens need wet food due to the size of their teeth. When the adult teeth develop, dry, hard food will help make teeth stronger. For those cats who are picky eaters, a mixture of both dry and wet food usually does the trick.
Place a sticky style tape on your furniture. A bit of sticky tape on your cat’s favorite scratching spot can quickly make the act less enjoyable for them. Some companies make tape specifically for this purpose. If you provide a scratching post along with tape-trapping your furniture, you’ll soon have your cat scratching only where you want it to.
Search for holes in your house that you don’t want your cat to get into. A cat can squeeze through incredibly small openings. This sort of behavior is particularly common in kittens. Beware of this as you bring a new kitty into your home. Repair or cover any good-sized holes you locate.
While you might not consider a cat a great hunter like a guard dog, the cat eliminates smaller pests, has the motivation and is much more family-friendly. Cats have any number of ways to contribute to family life, from providing love and affection to keeping vermin populations down. This makes cats extremely popular with owners.
